13 Best Beards & Moustaches of the Winter Olympics 2014

The International Olympic Committee doesn’t recognise the medal table that every media outlet in the world likes to show. Well, at BeardWatch we’re with the IOC. Medals don’t count, beards do.

Here are the top moustaches and beards from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Moustaches

M4. SamkovaEva Samkova smashed the field in the women’s snowboard cross, helped by her lucky moustache. Unfortunately she is disqualified for drawing the moustache on.

BRONZE

Eguzon et JO SotchiBond-Villain-named Benoit Valentin finished 8th in the Ski Halfpipe final and his moustache was only slightly embarrassing.

SILVER

M2. Mogul coach moustacheThis unknown coach for a female Japanese Mogul-ist only flashed on screen briefly but made quite an impression.

GOLD

M1. Filip FlisarCzech Dr-Robotnik-tache-a-like Filip Flisar didn’t make the Ski Cross final, but finished 6th overall. Must have used too much of that snowboard wax on hismoustache.

Tristan Walker – Doubles Luge, Canada4. Tristin WalkerBRONZE

Per Spett – Moguls, Sweden 3. Per SpeetPer is a real crowd favourite on the mogul circuit with his distinctive, trademark “superman” forward flip. When not skiing, Per is an iron ore miner. A real beardsman’s beardsman.

SILVER

Anton Grimus – Ski Cross, Australia

Sochi Olympics Freestyle Skiing MenDespite having just shaved the beard for charity, Anton Grimus’ beard rally stood out in the Extreme Park amongst the ski racers and snowboarders. This work of art didn’t get him far, obviously caused a lot of drag.

GOLD

Justin Kripps, Bryan Barnett, James Mcnaughton, Tim Randall & Graeme Rinholm – Bobsleigh, Canada

1. Justin Kripps, Bryan Barnett, James McNaughton, Tim Randall and spare Graeme RinholmThese gentlemen caused quite a stir online when they posted the photo below. It is currently the 6th most popular post ever on reddit’s “ladyboners” section (Yes, that is what it sounds like). Proof positive that the ladies love the beard.

It may seem unfair to include a 5 man team as one entry, but even when you even it out amongst them all you’re left with a solid beard and we respect the effort to instil team spirit.

Unfortunately their medal chances slipped away as their sled slipped halfway down the course on it’s side on their second run. Luckily, no one was hurt, but they can take heart and be very proud of the Winter Beard Olympics Gold Medal.

Pirlo v Moscardelli

A tweet from @fabrye has started something big.

Could it be Andrea Pirlo is no longer the top sports beard in Italy? A pretender to the throne has arisen, Davide Moscardelli.

Pirlo-v-MoscardelliCan Pirlo’s steely bearded gaze defend the crown from the undeniable bushiness of Moscardelli?

The vote results are:

Andrea Pirlo 25% – Davide Moscardelli 75%

The King is dead. Long live the King.

Wales – Italy
Strong performance from a predominantly bearded Italian team.

France – England
Poor effort from England gifted the win to France.

Ireland – Scotland (Draw)
Uninspiring all around.

Ireland – Wales
Narrow victory, D’arcy magnificent as usual but no back up for the ginger beardsman.

Gordon D'arcy - Ireland

Gordon D’arcy – Ireland

Scotland – England (Draw)
Hamilton the pick of the Scottish beards, but more of a team show pulls it back for England.

France – Italy
Very tough one to call, but Italy just edges it led by Castrogiovanni.

Wales – France
Adam Jones and Jake Ball as usual in imperious form, but the French take it.

Jake Ball - Wales

Jake Ball – Wales

Italy – Scotland
Narrow victory for Italy against a strong Scotland team.

England – Ireland
Was always going to be Marler v D’arcy, but the Englishman appears to have found his razor.

Ireland – Italy (Draw)
Grand Beard Slam dreams dashed for Ireland being overly reliant on D’arcy to carry the team.

Scotland – France
Scotland poor in the face of French faces.

Brice Dulin - France

Brice Dulin – France

England – Wales
England improving, but couldn’t compete with a Welsh team led by Jake Ball.

Italy – England
Much improved performance from England, but no match for Italy. Champions.

Wales – Scotland
Wales very poor, Scotland looking good.

France – Ireland
Strong finish to the tournament for France.
